La ciudad, ¿utopía permanente? (The city, a permanent utopia?)

Resumen

El texto que sigue aborda la idea de ciudad, y sus múltiples expresiones concretas, idea que representa al mismo tiempo el genio creador del individuo y las limitaciones insoslayables de la vida en comunidad. La hipótesis que se pretende probar es que el ideal-ciudad (imagen de la idea de ciudad, inspiradora de la utopía urbana) y la ciudad-ideal (estado deseado para toda ciudad real, como respuesta soñada en base al ideal-ciudad), configuran una idea de ciudad anhelada por todos, transformándose en germen de diversas utopías urbanas, las que clasificaremos en cinco etapas históricas principales. Desde allí se concluye que la ciudad, entendida como aquel ideal colectivo existente en la comunidad que la habita, no es precisamente la que se nos revela cotidianamente.

Abstract

The following text describes the idea of city and its multiple concrete expressions, this idea that represents at the same time, on the one hand the creative genius of the human being and on the other the unavoidable limitations of community life. The hypothesis to be tested is that the ideal-city (image of the city ,inspired on the idea of urban utopia ) and city-ideal (State desired for every real city as an answer dreamed by everybody on the basis of the ideal-city), becoming the idea of city wanted by everybody and becoming the seeds of various urban utopias, which we will classify in five major historical phases. From there it can be concluded that the city concept, understood as the collective ideal existing in the community that inhabits it, is not precisely the one that is revealed to us on a daily basis.
