The concentration of the population in regional capitals, along with their role in the political-administrative division, generate asymmetries in urban infrastructure and service provision. In this context, residents of smaller cities are often compelled to travel to larger urban centers to meet various needs, producing differentiated effects in both origin and destination areas. This study analyzes, based on a survey of 766 residents of small- and medium-sized cities, the motivations, comfort levels, expenses, and travel times associated with accessing services in Temuco and Valdivia, two regional capitals in southern Chile that have undergone processes of metropolitanization. The results indicate that at least 60% of trips take over an hour, that public transportation is the most commonly used mode, and that travel purposes show significant heterogeneity. These findings highlight mobility processes in cities undergoing metropolitanization as a key component in guiding the National Regional Planning Policy, particularly for accessibility and its operationalization through the System of Territorial Indicators and Standards (SIET-Chile).
