Abstract

The roman bellum iustum established a relatively narrow frame within which the Republic had to conform for the sake of justify the wars it undertook, generating, because of this, a diversity of validating speeches to meet its requirements. In the present paper we explore the possibility of a recurrent argument’s construction to support wars, backed in the figure of “hereditary enemies” as justification for the roman expansion, analyzing direct antecedents and roman’s society aspects that may have rooted this idea.
