The characteristics of the municipal cemetery of Chillán are reviewed in the context of the creation of norms that separated the Catholic Church from the administration of the Chilean State in relation to death in the city.
The law of secular cemeteries is of historical importance, since its promulgation provoked polarization in the country between those who were faithful followers of the Catholic Church and the rites traditionally administered by it, and those who proposed a more liberal ideology, with state control over the main aspects of human activity, such as death.
The study describes the regulatory process that led to the Law of Secular Cemeteries as a tool to reduce inequality in Chillán society and the implications of the construction of a municipal cemetery in Chillán.
