La investigación no pretende recrear una historia de dos ciudades (Dickens, 1858). Por el contrario, intenta en amplios trazos, lo que Le Golf (1974), explicaba como otra forma de investigar la historia: “se sitúa en el punto de conjunción de lo individual, de lo estructural y de lo coyuntural, de lo marginal y lo general” (Le Golf, 1969). Se acota entre los siglos XVI e inicios del siglo XIX, entre la fundación de las ciudades de la Concepción y San Bartolomé de Chillán y los comienzos de la emancipación del reino.
