Social housing in Guayaquil (1940-1970): Transformation processes in collective spaces
Keywords:

Collective housing projects influence the urban fabric through a multi-scale system of spaces that softens the boundaries between public life –the street– and private life –the house. Large cities in developing countries are subject to constant political transformations and exponential population growth. This paper analyses collective housing projects in Guayaquil, a colonial port and the largest city in Ecuador. These projects were built during a specific period when numerous state-funded housing programs were undertaken according to an idea of urban development different from the current model. This research analyzes the transformations in the collective spaces of these social housing projects as a response to social segregation and spatial fragmentation dynamics caused by an increased loss of sense of community.
