Pomp, ceremony and ritual in Chiloé

Abstract

Chiloé’s traditional culture is extraordinarily rich in ritual. This is expressed in religious celebrations, popular festivities, the minga2-a specific kind of collective work that brings together the community- with its associated feasting and festivity, ceremonial processions and burials. This text is specifically concerned with these latter two activities, seeking to emphasise the roots and significance of the religious procession a nd t he c entral r ole p layed b y t he funeral ceremony and burial in Chiloé’s culture. The unique characteristics of place, architecture and imagery displayed by both these rites have contributed to the region’s cultural, urban and architectural identity.
