1960-1980 Masterplan for the city of Concepción. Personal recollections on its Fiftieth Anniversary

The reconstruction of Concepción following the earthquake on 27th February, 2010, coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1960 Concepción Masterplan. With all its ups and downs, this document guided the city’s urban policy from the 1960 earthquake up until 1980. To commemorate the anniversary and contribute to the debate on the future masterplan, it seems opportune to provide a record of the way the 1960 masterplan was studied and drawn up, the regional and global concerns taken into consideration, the main urban, architectural and landscaping design decisions, economic and transport intentions; as well as the concretion of these ideas into management systems and specific regulations. But above all, it presents an opportune moment to emphasise the social and architectural focus of the planning decisions undertaken.
