Abstract

On 27th February 2010 at 3.34am a powerful earthquake shook the southern central regions of Chile and the subsequent tsunami devastated almost 700km of coastline. The earthquake reached a magnitude of 8.8 degrees on the Richter scale: the fifth biggest earthquake ever measured worldwide. The destruction caused by the natural forces unleashed during the early hours of the 27th February has transformed that day into a prominent date in the collective memory, one associated with fear, pain and loss but also with solidarity and heroism.
