Reconstruction of housing in heritage villages. Proposal for San Lorenzo de Tarapacá, Chile

Abstract

The earthquake that occurred last February 27th caused a great deal of destruction. However, it is not the first time a seismic event of this scale has affected our country with such consequences. On 13 June 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.8 degrees on the Richter scale seriously damaged villages of considerable architectural, cultural and heritage value in Tarapacá, in Region I. The project strategies identified in this article have been developed from the study of one of these villages, San Lorenzo de Tarapacá, and could prove a useful basis for other such interventions in heritage villages destroyed by the recent earthquake. The reconstruction system is based on analysis and identification of the heritage values of the place and the use of these elements to develop architectural reconstruction projects.

Integrante Proyecto Tarapacá, Santiago, Chile. (www.proyectotarapaca. org). Proyecto Tarapacá es una iniciativa para la reconstrucción del patrimonio arquitectónico, llevada adelante por arquitectos y profesionales de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, cuyo objetivo es la recuperación de viviendas por medio de sistemas constructivos sustentables, económicos, resistentes y duraderos, que permitan la construcción de hogares dignos y respetuosos del patrimonio local. Este proyecto nace como respuesta a la destrucción generada por el terremoto de Junio de 2005, ocurrido en el Norte Grande de Chile, como método para abordar la reconstrucción de pueblos de interés patrimonial afectados por catástrofes naturales. Desde el año 2005 se ha estado trabajando en el diseño y construcción de un prototipo de vivienda a través del caso de San Lorenzo de Tarapacá, aplicado en la construcción de una Biblioteca en dicho poblado. Actualmente, la iniciativa se encuentra desarrollando propuestas en la localidad de Paredones, en la VI Región del Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins, Chile, afectada por el sismo de Febrero de 2010.
