Diseño sustentable y calidad bioclimática del espacio público en zonas áridas

Public spaces in the cities of northern Chile and Antofagasta in particular, are in the midst of transformation. However, sustainability criteria suited to the coastal desert conditions are not being taken into consideration. In fact, the current quality of materials and use of the spaces mean buildings deteriorate rapidly, with the result that public community activity migrates into the comfortable, air conditioned interiors of the large shopping centres.
The idea of sustainability is interplayed with durability. Good public design in desert zones requires thermal comfort and careful handling of sunlight; hence, the incorporation of shaded areas, entrances, pergolas, awnings, arbors and projecting eaves into the urban language. These not only serve as excellent resources for climate control and urban image, but above all become architectonic realities that describe the definition and roots of the public life.
