Abstract

This article reflects upon the development of rail transport in the Buenos Aires province, a significant phenomenon in the localization of activities and population, in spatial relationships and in the territorial organization.

The Ferrocarril del Sur, during its construction between 1880 and 1930, had a strong impact upon territorial organisation. This paper deals with the urban aspects of the railway, both in terms of how the characteristics of the landscape influenced the railways, and how the latter in turn affected the population, regional land values and the structure of geographic space moulded by rail infrastructure, bridges and viaducts, rural and urban stations, supply infrastructure, etc.
