Abstract

The "Chair Law" (Ley Silla) is a reform to Mexico's Federal Labor Law that guarantees workers the right to rest periods when their duties require them to remain standing for extended periods during the workday. Its legal foundation is established in Article 123 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, the Federal Labor Law, and the Official Mexican Standards governing ergonomics, occupational safety, and health. The corresponding provisions came fully into force on December 15, 2025. Scientific evidence strongly supports this measure, demonstrating that prolonged standing increases the risk of venous insufficiency, lower back and neck pain, muscle fatigue, and chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Consequently, alternating between standing and sitting is widely recommended as a key preventive ergonomic strategy. Although some business sectors have expressed concerns regarding implementation costs and workplace adaptations, the long-term benefits of improved occupational health, including reduced absenteeism, lower staff turnover, and decreased medical expenses, are expected to outweigh the initial investment. Overall, this reform represents a significant step toward protecting workers' health, promoting decent working conditions, and strengthening labor rights. Nevertheless, its effectiveness will ultimately depend on adequate enforcement, monitoring, and compliance.
