Solar protections and their implication for energy demand: the case of a public building in Concepción, Chile
Keywords:
Limitation of energy demand, passive strategies, thermal simulation, solar protection, public buildingsAbstract
To determine solar gains through windows openings with solar protection and to analyze the thermal performance of a buildingis a relatively new topic in Chile. However, inadequate solar control generates, in some cases, overheating problems in building. This research seeks to find a procedure that allows the evaluation of four types of solar protection and analyze their energy implications in a public building, where it is evident that the designer did not contemplate the new regulations states by the authorities for this type of buildings. For the case study, 37 scenarios with different modified solar factors, defined by manual calculation, were determined and evaluated through dynamic simulation (TAS). Firstly, it was analised the performance of two rooms and then the results of energy demand of the whole building. The solar protection used (overhangs, setback, horizontal and vertical slats) reduced cooling demand from 52 to 73% (increasing heating demand) however, the total energy demand (heating and cooling) decreased from 24 to 31%.
