This article deals with the sustainability measures adopted in the design for the Arena Pantanal, the new stadium in the capital of Mato Grosso, one of the Brazilian host-cities for the 2014 FIFA World CupTM . To host this sporting mega-event, the city in question proposed a series of works and requirements imposed by FIFATM that will promote changes in urban space, but that mainly cater to their interests. Among these, environmental conservation is taken into consideration through initiatives to reduce the consumption of energy, water, and supplies. These measures adopted in Cuiaba, a pioneer in the country, attempt to publicize the benefits of green building and obtain the first certification of environmental sustainability for a public building site through a U.S. LEEDTM label. Ultimately, it was observed that a building of this size cannot be 100% sustainable, although its environmental impacts can be minimized.
