The historical construction of the central area of Los Saltos del Laja, Chile: dual tourist landscape

This research analyzes the construction of the historical landscape of the Los Saltos del Laja Central Area (ACSL, in its Spanish acronym), from its configuration under the consolidated 19th-century hacienda or landowner socioeconomic model to its transformation into a dynamic and complex tourist landscape. The main objective is to understand, in chronological order, the stages and perspectives that have shaped the ACSL’s current tourism landscape, and to identify the physical and sociocultural factors behind its transformation. A qualitative and exploratory approach was used, combining a review of secondary sources—such as aerial and historical photographs, cartography, and bibliographic documents—with semi-structured interviews with local stakeholders, permitting the collection of primary data and subsequent narrative analysis. The integration of different sources through methodological triangulation made it possible to contextualize the historical transformation of the landscape in the ACSL, identifying ruptures and tensions evident in the sector's tourism dynamics as key elements in the landscape’s construction.
