The influence of soundscape on urban environmental quality. A study on the city of Popayán (Colombia)

Abstract

Urban soundscape consists of physical and perceptual characteristics. Its study makes it possible to understand the interaction between citizens and the acoustic environment in which they live. This work examines the soundscape of the historic quarter of Popayán, Colombia. 121 measurements of noise and 50 records of perceived loudness in situ were made in order to obtain maps of the urban soundscape. These maps enabled the comprehensive assessment of the soundscape in the case-study area. The results verify the dependence of spatial and temporal behavioral patterns and suggest that their variability could influence the Latin American city’s sound experience. It can be concluded that soundscape should be considered during the urban planning process. From this perspective, parks and green areas should be taken into account not only for environmental and other well- known reasons, but also to provide healthier and more balanced soundscapes for the city and its citizens. Likewise, for future studies it is recommended the scale be extended, as well as the analysis of the relationship between public open space and its resulting soundscape.

Author Biographies

Julián Andrés Grijalba-Obando, University Institution Major College of Cauca, Colombia.

Julián Grijalba (Popayán, May 18, 1994) is an architect from Colombia and residents in the capital of Cauca. He is a researcher in the soundscape and urban planning and has several years of scientific experience, which has led to present his work in events of international impact.

He graduated in Architecture from the University Institution Major College of Cauca in 2017 receiving an Honorable Mention, with his project "The influence of the soundscape in the urban environment. A study in Popayán (Colombia) ", directed by MSc. Francisco León Zuñiga. In this stage he directed his career to research in urban planning and landscape studies.

He has participated in several research projects of the University Institution Major College of Cauca, where he is currently working. He has also worked in the Mayor's Office of the Municipality of Popayán. Among the projects in which he has participated, some can be highlighted, such as the "Research and development of sustainable urban planning in Cauca; Case study Popayán" (2017) or the "Implementation of the planning program 2018 of the Territorial Plan in the Municipality of Popayán (2018).

He has collaborated and researched with important architects and geographers from inside and outside Colombia such as Valeriá Paul Carril, Joan Tort i Donada, Francisco León Zuñiga, Carlos Gonzales, Gabriel Leal del Castillo and Maria Clara Echeverría. He is currently a researcher at the Center for Urban Studies - Unimayor.
