Facing urban distress in big european areas – methodological and theoretical approaches
Keywords:
urban distress, sustainable development, urban renovation, quality of lifeAbstract
Distressed urban areas represent a threat for social cohesion and sustainable development of cities. Their inner structure is affected by a group of social, economic and environmental problems that have been studied in detail from a theoretical and practical perspective. Despite of this, traditional management strategies have not succeed in the aim of fighting the rising urban distress, due to the fact that the solutions have not faced the intrinsic complexity of the problem from a local perspective.
In this context, a consortium of research institutions and local administration from different European countries developed a research project for enhancing the quality of life of large urban distressed areas (Large Urban Distressed Areas – LUDA). The article analyzes the main theoretical approaches to the theme of urban renovation and presents part of the results of the project: the strategic proposal for enhancing the quality of life in large urban distressed areas.
