Keywords:
territorial construction, metropolitan area, local developmentAbstract
The origin of the university in Canarias goes back to 1701 when a new advanced educational centre was created in relation to the settlement of Augustans in San Cristobal de La Laguna. During the 300 years that passed since the establishment of the advanced educational centre, it has had multiple repercussions on the configuration of the main urban space of Tenerife.
This work presents a reflection on the role that the University has played in the territorial construction of the metropolitan area of Tenerife, which represents a matter of inquiry that can be deal with later with more precision, emphasizing the characteristics of the relationship between the University and the city. This first approach presents a critical view that is also propositive, based on the belief that the University represents a valuable factor for local development.
