EXTENSION ARQUITECTURAS DEL SUR Nº65 POETIC DWELLING

One dwells in a house, but one also does so in the square. The house, which embraces the private dwelling, has its mutual connection in the public space, the square, the street, and the city. In this initiate-collective house-square dialectic, how space is occupied can be infinitely diverse. However, on this occasion, our gaze has turned towards a transcendent dwelling, which evokes fantasy, creativity, and the sublime, which we have called the POETIC DWELLING.

This poetic dwelling can be found both in the home and in the community space, while the universe to determine what is poetic is unrestricted and infinite. We imagine from the popular, spontaneous, or vernacular dwelling, to the one organized by a small community around the sea, the desert, or the high mountains. On certain occasions, poetry is explicit and declared in the architectural act, as in the Open City of Ritoque in Valparaíso, Chile, where poetry appears as a founding word and at the heart of the proposal. However, in most cases poetry is implicit: who could doubt, for example, that there is poetry in the colorful hand-painted architecture with geometric motifs in the village of Kiébélé in Burkina Faso, Africa? We feel the same about the Tortel fishing cove in southern Chile, inhabited by a network of wooden walkways unique in the country and today declared a Historic Monument by Chile’s National Monuments Council.

What will poetic dwelling be like in Latin America? Arquitecturas del Sur Nº65. We thus invite the Latin American and world academic community to send their contributions and research on this topic, with the idea of dreaming that it is still possible to imagine a dwelling, whether individual, family, or collective, that evokes fantasy and poetry.

Arquitecturas del Sur calls on the academic and professional community to present work that results in and insists on protecting inclusive social speech as a new way of using architectural space.

EXTENSION ARQUITECTURAS DEL SUR Nº63 HYBRID AND MIXED, VALUES OF A COUNTER-DOGMATIC ARCHITECTURE.

The surveying of social values associated with an unorthodox, liquid, elusive reality, where concepts such as the pure, the clear, and the perfect have been surpassed by the tensions of contemporary life, led architectural dogmas into a clear crisis at least fifty years ago. Venturi was one of the first to make this reflection associated with a chromatic idea where the gray, settled - and sat - on the white or black. It was the end of the great narratives of modern and, by then, historical architecture. From that moment on, the possibility that otherness, diversity, and difference would be installed on blurred interstices that architectural rationality, had disappeared without suture or closure.

This path, apparently secondary, unpaved, and full of curves and slopes, offers itself as a much riskier one, though far wider in alternatives, frictions, and perspectives. Our contemporary society seems ready to corroborate, review, and even modify everything that was certain. It is normal then, that fear sets in, but it is even more normal, that boldness, courage, and a lack of prejudice are offered as the genuine pillars of a new time.

Architecture, too, no longer supports definitive guidelines, manuals, or catalogs. Recipes are presented as ephemeral moments, ready to disappear or be altered. Here, the emergence of a wider and broader architecture, where nuances, twists, and distortions are at odds with regularity and the canon, offers space and shelter to these inevitable othernesses. The hybrid, that which comes from entities of different nature is then validated, where the mixture, the crossbreeding, hatches with eloquent presence, without arrogance, but never hidden.

Arquitecturas del Sur 63 invites academic research and design practice to show their escape doors, or better, the windows through which the air crosses to indicate flows and decomposed currents, distorted perspectives, unstable grounds where walking along them means adding purposes, which are less ordered, but more extreme.

Submissions will be received until OCTOBER 31st, 2022, through the journal´s online platform (http://revistas.ubiobio.cl/index.php/AS/about/submissions), and must strictly adhere to Arquitecturas del Sur´s policies and standards, which are detailed in the section, “Ethics Policy and Publication Guidelines” for authors.

ARQUITECTURAS DEL SUR Nº62. PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE: THE ACTION OF THE STATE

In Chile and Latin America, the State has built the city. Thus, from buildings and public spaces, institutional architecture, schools, housing, hospitals, industrial buildings, transportation, and even in the most diverse spheres, State action in the production of public architecture is undeniable.

At different times, this fact has been more or less valued or recognized. For example, during the presidential period of José Manuel Balmaceda (1886-1891), his administration undertook numerous public works that sought to spread modernization throughout the country through buildings and infrastructure. Likewise, during the 1940s, with the boost given by the -Frente Popular (Popular Front, in English) governments, there was a sustained institutionalization that resulted in the construction of several buildings that spread the benefits of modern architecture into public architecture and popular housing. Subsequently, with the application of an economic-social model, which from the 1970s until practically today has privileged the private sector, the actions of the State in the production of the city have been curtailed, and on many occasions, muted or vilified; now we speak of a crisis of State absence.

Nevertheless, we are now witnessing a political and historical process where new State perspectives and roles are being thought – and even dreamed of... could we be talking about a new State, of a new State operation that rescues its institutional and political value as a promoter of more and better architecture?

In this context, Arquitecturas del Sur invites the academic community to present their research on State-produced public architecture in Ibero-America, whether about past or contemporary works, with the purpose of stimulating a critical review of such architectural and urban production, while broadening the view on Latin American architecture and public space, according to the new political trends that are being seen in the region today.

Arquitecturas del Sur invites the academic and professional community to present works that revisit and insist on embracing inclusive social dialogue as a new pact for the use of the architectural space.

Submissions will be received until MAY 20th, 2022, through the journals online platform (http://revistas.ubiobio.cl/index.php/AS/about/submissions), and must strictly adhere to Arquitecturas del Sur´s policies and standards, which are detailed in the section, “Ethics Policy and Publication Guidelines” for authors.
