EXTENSION ARQUITECTURAS DEL SUR Nº65 POETIC DWELLING

One dwells in a house, but one also does so in the square. The house, which embraces the private dwelling, has its mutual connection in the public space, the square, the street, and the city. In this initiate-collective house-square dialectic, how space is occupied can be infinitely diverse. However, on this occasion, our gaze has turned towards a transcendent dwelling, which evokes fantasy, creativity, and the sublime, which we have called the POETIC DWELLING.

This poetic dwelling can be found both in the home and in the community space, while the universe to determine what is poetic is unrestricted and infinite. We imagine from the popular, spontaneous, or vernacular dwelling, to the one organized by a small community around the sea, the desert, or the high mountains. On certain occasions, poetry is explicit and declared in the architectural act, as in the Open City of Ritoque in Valparaíso, Chile, where poetry appears as a founding word and at the heart of the proposal. However, in most cases poetry is implicit: who could doubt, for example, that there is poetry in the colorful hand-painted architecture with geometric motifs in the village of Kiébélé in Burkina Faso, Africa? We feel the same about the Tortel fishing cove in southern Chile, inhabited by a network of wooden walkways unique in the country and today declared a Historic Monument by Chile’s National Monuments Council.

What will poetic dwelling be like in Latin America? Arquitecturas del Sur Nº65. We thus invite the Latin American and world academic community to send their contributions and research on this topic, with the idea of dreaming that it is still possible to imagine a dwelling, whether individual, family, or collective, that evokes fantasy and poetry.

Arquitecturas del Sur calls on the academic and professional community to present work that results in and insists on protecting inclusive social speech as a new way of using architectural space.
