Financing of urban-ecological projects through the exchange of carbon credits

This article presents one of the current possibilities for the partial fi nancing of the construction, operation or maintenance processes of urban and territorial projects designed or implemented within a framework towards sustainability and environmental friendliness. The scheme relies on the generation of Green Credits or Carbon Credits, which can be traded in the international market. The projects that can generate these credits cover a variety of scales; but this article focuses specifi cally on urban projects, the so-called “Eco-city” projects. Green Credits or Carbon Credits are widely used as fi nancial instruments in projects that are rather linked to the generation of renewable energy.
This work will review some Eco-city projects, specifi cally the case of Dongtan in China.
