Abstract

Searching for the best development in the uses of timber, it is studied different techniques modifying the properties of the material in some ways. One of the ways is the treatment with high temperature which works on the internal structure of wood, producing improvements in some of its properties, but there is the possibility of obtaining opposite effects. For this reason, it is necessary to evaluate the product, having in mind the process, its use and to consider the species of wood. The object of this study is to characterize the radiata pine timber from the Basque Country (Spain) with two different thermo-treatment temperatures, 190ºC and 210ºC, by the Thermowood method, and to compare with control pieces of the same species, dimensions and origin but without this termo-treatment.
It is presented the results obtained referred to the equilibrium moisture content, the dimensional stability, the biological durability, and some mechanical properties. It is observed significant differences between the
treatment temperatures in the moisture content (until 43% of loss), the bending strength (until 53% of loss), the impact resistance (until 57% of loss), the axial compression (until 40% of gain), the shear strength (until
25,6% of loss), cracks (until 30,5% of loss) and the durability against fungi. It is concluded that when the main criteria for use is the durability, it is advisable the treatment of 210ºC, but when this request isn´t necessary,
the treatment with 190ºC is the best, because it produces less variations in mechanical properties and offers a similar dimensional stability of the 210ºC treatment.
