Education for sustainable development: Reflections from a doctoral experience
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article reflects on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as an object of research within the context of doctoral education. Drawing on a situated experience, it examines three dimensions of the research process: the construction of the research problem, methodological and field-access decisions, and the ethical and affective dimensions of conducting research. From a reflexive perspective, the article problematizes the apparent neutrality of the research process, showing how it is shaped by personal trajectories, theoretical positionings, institutional tensions, and structural conditions inherent to the academic field. It further argues that reflexivity and epistemological vigilance constitute essential conditions for knowledge production in contexts of increasing socioenvironmental complexity. Consequently, the paper challenges conventional understandings of ESD not only as a field of study but also as a space that transforms the very ways in which research is conducted.
